Yes, I did actually say it. EdTech is a career that is recession proof and pandemic proof field.
Let's get right to it, and I'll explain why.
1. CHANGE is the one constant in the training and development field (and in EdTech in general).
Training is still required as companies find new ways to do things, even if there is a steep learning curve before real results are shown.
This is one of the reasons why EdTech skyrocketed during the pandemic.
It wouldn’t surprise me with current trends if EdTech doesn’t grow amidst a recession.
2. Because every organization in the world trains people, this field is applicable to ANY industry.
As one former teacher turned entrepreneur wrote,
“I've created training for the United Nations Human Refugee Agency, childcare providers, banks, property management companies, government, health care companies, hospitals, and many other organizations. For years, I concentrated on oil and gas because it was so profitable, but when the industry crashed in 2015, I diversified and began designing training for other industries.”
Another former teacher has said,
“I have created training for hospitals, designing personalized curriculum for nurses as technology progressed and virtual reality simulations became more and more prevalent to train nurses across my 35 year career.”
This applicability that you find in EdTech is not possible in every profession.
The EdTech industry itself is expansive in opportunities for teachers, but for those educators that want to detour away from impacting the youth of America, options are out there to grow and develop professionally… without going el broke.
3. There are many ways to engage in the EdTech world.
You don't have to have a full-time W2 job.
When companies were laying employees off during the recession of 2008-2009, companies hired contractors instead because it was less of a liability.
Those contractors needed to be trained, so Instructional Designers, Professional Learning Facilitators, and other professionals in EdTech were still needed (they just hired long-term contractors instead of W2 employees.)
I know things are a bit uncertain right now, which is why it's even more important to make sure you are positioned in a career field that is doing well.
You can still stay in the field of education and make a positive impact on the youth (not just adults)!
With that being said,
Make the most of your day!
